Definitely something we use when in need of showing that we have separated two things or perhaps when expressing current status of your relationship. This emoji is often interpreted as the two people with a wall between them, and although you may consider this a metaphorical one given that it is only the heavy division symbol emoji, people still use it in this manner, and when you think about it, division still represents the separation and it makes sense to use an emoji like this in such way, so as long as you use it in that way, it’s okay.
